FKM rubber gaskets are cut from a synthetic fluoroelastomer and are primarily used in the automotive, aerospace and petrochemical sectors due to their performance in demanding sealing applications. These fluoroelastomers use peroxide cure chemistry that leads to a superior resistance to acid, steam, and aggressive engine oils.

When it comes to gasket materials, good compression set resistance or the ability to spring back after the load is taken off is needed. Other desirable properties include a wide temperature range and good chemical resistance. FKM offers exceptional performance in all these regards. Whereas, the K indicates the resistance to swelling. Since K is the lowest possible rating, it means that FKM swells less than almost all other elastomeric materials.

FKM is also highly resistant to chemicals and can withstand ozone, typical automotive fuels, and hydrocarbon lubricating oils. FKM also withstands high pressures and vibrations. However, the material does have its drawbacks. FKM is also not recommended for use with car and aircraft brake fluids or for steam and hot water.

In industries such as oil and gas, where dangerous gases and chemicals are always present, this type of material is considered ideal. Used between two surfaces to prevent leaks, FKM gaskets create a durable seal that will not degrade despite exposure to the corrosive fuels and chemicals that move through it. You also can tell FKM gaskets from other rubber gaskets by their green or brown colouring.

These gaskets and seals also provide low outgassing in vacuum-sealing applications. Applications which are suitable for the use of FFKM gaskets and seals are often found in the aerospace, energy, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and process industries. Using gaskets and seals produced from FFKM can mean lower operating costs resulting from less frequent seal changes and repairs.

If you have a demanding application involving the use of high temperatures and aggressive media, FFKM gaskets and seals can provide significant cost and revenue benefits.

The proven reliability of FFKM seals in demanding applications also lessens the need for frequent inspections of seal integrity.
