Important spells for you to buy from the vendor spell scrolls to teach yourself are Heal All and Give your Pet something like Summon Zombies or Skeletons. Then you basically have tons of minions doing the hard work for you. Cast Heal All often to make sure your pets are always at max health before, after and during fights when this isn't in cool down.

I was lucky enough to find Transmuter Shoulders and Gloves I believe, these add to Pet and Minion damage, speeds and armor.
